Indeed, Auld Reekie has plenty of castles – though some stand today in a ruinous state, have been extensively altered, or have been lost altogether.

5. Lochend Castle, Lochend
Also, known as Restalrig Castle, Lochend Castle hangs over Lochend Park and dates from the 16th century. It was reportedly burned by William Gilmour of the Inch around 200 years later. 6. Craigmillar Castle, Craigmillar Castle Rd
In use from the 14th century onwards, Craigmillar Castle is one of Edinburgh's most ancient sites and was famously used by Mary, Queen of Scots as a safe haven in 1566. Today the castle ruins are among Edinburgh's most visited tourist attractions outside of the city centre, and have been used as a filming location on numerous occasions. 7. Merchiston Castle, Colinton Road
Home to John Napier, the inventor of logarithms, Merchiston Castle was constructed in the 15th century. In the 1960s the ancient tower was incorporated into the development of the new Napier Technical College, which is today Napier University. Photo: TSPL
8. Midhope Castle
Midhope Castle, near South Queensferry, is Lallybrock, Jamie Fraser's ancestral home in Outlander. The 16th Century fortress is found in the grounds of Hopetoun House, which was also used in Outlander as the Duke of Sandringham's residence. Photo: Third Party
