Edinburgh has a reputation for having incredible restaurants and cafés, but this year we lost quite a few. From fine dining Michelin star restaurants like 21212, to legendary takeaway vans like Mike English’s snack bar on Leith Links, the Capital said farewell to many beloved businesses in 2023.
Some Edinburgh businesses that closed their doors for the final time this year said it was simply the right time for their journey to come to an end whilst others said their closure was brought on by rising costs and the impact of the pandemic. Changes are inevitable on the business scene, but it is always sad to see favourite places close their doors for the last time. Here are 26 restaurants and cafés which have shut in Edinburgh in 2023.
25. Vesta Bar and Kitchen
Vesta Bar and Kitchen closed in October, five years after taking over the premises from Social Bite. The Queensferry Street bar and restaurant offered a ‘pay it forward’ scheme where customers could buy meals to help people experiencing homelessness. Co-owner David Hall said: "We'd like to thank everyone, our fabulous customers, suppliers, friends and family who have supported us over the last few years. Together, through our Pay It Forward service, we have served over 11,000 two-course meals to people experiencing homelessness which is, quite simply, outstanding.” Photo: Google Maps
26. Aurora
Located on Great Junction Street, Aurora announced in November that it will cease trading after the bells on Hogmanay. The cosy restaurant, that had room for just 18 diners, became a firm favourite for its seasonally adapted tasting menus featuring local ingredients. Owners said: “The last seven years have been an extraordinary journey, however all good things must come to an end.” Photo: Third Party
