Police in Edinburgh have detained a convicted murderer following a two-day search.

On Tuesday, officers launched an appeal to trace Raymond McCourt, 59, after he failed to return to HMP Castle Huntly where he is serving his sentence.

Raymond McCourt was detained by police in Edinburgh this morning (Friday, April 25) on London Road and will now be returned to prison. The BBC reported that the 59-year-old was ‘was arrested by plain clothes officers after being removed from a Lothian Bus’ near its junction with Leith Walk.

It comes after McCourt was reported missing to police around 5.30pm on Tuesday, April, 22 when he did not return to the open prison. Police later shared CCTV images of the absconded prisoner and warned the public not to approach him.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Thank you to everyone who assisted us and to those members of the public who contacted us with information.”
