On Monday afternoon, a motorbike instructor was accosted by male youths on electric bikes.

They attempted to kick him off his bike, as well as circling him and his client as they drove towards Cameron Toll roundabout.

The instructor was left shaken, and police have now launched an investigation into the incident.

Superintendent Sam Ainslie commented: “Around 1.20pm on Monday, 29 August 2022, we were called to a report of four male youths on electric motorbikes riding recklessly in the Peffermill Road area of Edinburgh, with their behaviour hindering a one to one motorcycle training session.

"Notwithstanding obvious road safety concerns, the behaviour of these youths understandably alarmed both the trainee rider and instructor.

“Thankfully no-one was hurt and I wish to reassure the public that this is an isolated incident.

“This type of behaviour will not be tolerated and a criminal investigation has been launched, with enquiries ongoing to trace the youths responsible.”

Concerns have been raised over public safety after a spate of similar anti-social behaviour across Edinburgh.

Youths, wearing balaclavas and riding bikes have been responsible for multiple incidents in the last few months, including an assault in the Roseburn area, and harassment in the Meadows.

A group similarly attired also allegedly stole a bike in Marchmont.

Superintendent Ainslie continued: “Every incident requires to be dynamically risk assessed based on the individual circumstances and prior to initiating a pursuit, due consideration must be given to multiple factors.

“These include balancing the risk posed to road users, pedestrians and the wider community and whether a rider is utilising a safety helmet. Should a pursuit take place, there is clearly a greater risk to motorcycle riders not wearing a helmet.

“As ever, there are other options available and should a rider not be apprehended or traced at the time of an incident, investigative opportunities include targeted patrols and the use of CCTV.

“Edinburgh Policing Division remains committed to addressing road safety issues and associated anti-social behaviour, and we will continue to work with a range of partners, including our Road Policing colleagues and the motorbike community.

“I would urge anyone with information to contact us on 101 or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
