A violent thug with more than 90 convictions to his name has admitted slashing a notorious Glasgow gangster in a savage prison attack.

James Frail, 44, attacked Lyons family mobster Andrew ‘Dumbo” Gallacher with a knife while the pair were serving lengthy sentences at HMP Addiewell, West Lothian, in August 2021.

Gallacher was working with a prison maintenance team painting a building when he and Frail became involved in a violent confrontation.

The henchman - who was serving at least 20 years for murder bid plots on rivals including Steven ‘Bonzo’ Daniel - was left covered in blood following the attack by Frail at the prison’s Lomond Wing.

Gallacher, 43, was subsequently found dead in his cell at the jail three months later in an unrelated incident.

Frail pleaded guilty to assaulting Andrew Gallacher by repeatedly striking him on the head with a sharp implement to his severe injury when he appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court in May.

Frail was back at the capital court for sentencing on Thursday where Sheriff Christopher Dickson described the incident as “a serious assault” that resulted in “a severe injury being caused”.

Sheriff Dickson said: “Given the seriousness of the offence and your record I consider a custodial sentence the only appropriate disposal.”

Frail, currently at HMP Glenochil, was given a 13 month jail term that will run consecutively to his current sentence. Frail was previously told he may never be freed from jail and was given an Order for Lifelong Restriction after he attacked two hotel workers during a robbery bid in 2018.

He armed himself and threatened the two staff members at the Apex Hotel in Edinburgh just nine days after being released from a previous prison term.

The thug was found guilty after a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh and Judge Lord Beckett placed him on the OLR and sentenced him to three year prison sentence.

But the judge told Frail: “That does not mean you will only serve three years. It is an indeterminate period. You will only be released from prison when the parole board considers it is no longer necessary for the safety of the public for you to be imprisoned.”

Frail, from Edinburgh, was jailed for 12 years in 2008 for a series of robberies including an incident where he stabbed a bookmaker’s employee who had bravely attempted to tackle him during one raid. He had carried out seven robberies on shops in Edinburgh that year sparking a major police hunt.

Andrew ‘Dumbo’ Gallacher and five co-accused linked to the Lyon’s crime family were all found guilty of a series of murder attempts and sentenced to a total of 104 years behind bars in May 2019.

One attack saw former taxi boss Steven ‘Bonzo’ Daniel, nephew of the late crime boss Jamie Daniel, cornered after a 100mph car chase through the streets of Glasgow in May 2017. His Skoda Octavia motor was rammed off the road before his face was carved up in an attack by a gang of machete-wielding thugs.

Gallacher was discovered lifeless in his cell by prison staff at HMP Addiewell on November 12, 2021.
