A section of a major Edinburgh road will be closed for up to six weeks following the discovery of a gas leak.
Gas engineers were called to a junction on Crewe Road South on Monday night following reports of a smell of gas. A specialist team of SGN engineers investigated the area on May 13 and took the decision to fully replace the gas network at this location.

The road will be closed in both directions. A signed diversion will be in place via Carrington Road, East Fettes Avenue and Comley Bank Road.
SGN spokesperson, Bradley Barlow, said: “We understand this will be disruptive, but the work will prevent future emergency work and disruption. This is a busy route and will be working extended hours to complete this upgrade work as quickly and safely as possible. We anticipate this work to take six weeks to complete.”
It is understood SGN are liaising closely with the emergency service to limit disruption. The road closure will affect motorists travelling to and from Western General Hospital.
Lothian Buses said nine services will also be affected. Writing on their website they said: “Due to emergency gas works, part of Crewe Road South is closed with immediate effect until further notice.”
