Edinburgh Waverley evacuated and all trains halted after fire alarm sounds

Services have reopened but passengers are warned to expect cancellations and delays until the end of the day

Rail commuters face major disruption this evening after Edinburgh’s Waverley station was evacuated due to a false fire alarm.

At 6.24pm ScotRail announced it has suspended all train services to and from the station following the incident.

Lines have since reopened and work is underway to get trains back into position after Scottish Fire and Rescue Service investigate the cause of the alarm.

ScotRail is warning passengers that delays, alterations and cancellations will be ongoing as they get services up and running again.

National Rail estimates that some trains could be delayed by up to 40 minutes, with disruption expected until the end of the day.

A ticket acceptance is in place with Edinburgh Trams between Edinburgh and Edinburgh Gateway, and with Lothian Busses between Edinburgh and Gorebridge and Edinburgh and Prestonpans in both directions.

Passengers are advised to check their journey online before travelling.
