New Edinburgh car showroom approved in Newbridge to join adjacent showroom
New building to operate in conjunction with existing adjacent showroom in Newbridge business park
A new single-storey car showroom has been approved in Newbridge by the City of Edinburgh Council, to join the adjacent showroom at the site.
John Clark (Holdings) Ltd applied on August 31 for permission to build a new ‘Polestar’ motor retail showroom at 6 Lonehead Drive, on land currently used for car storage.
The proposal seeks to erect a new 6.35 metre high car retail showroom within a wider site which will operate in conjunction with the existing retail showroom to the north west of the proposal. Three parking spaces are proposed in the 2536m2 application site area, with the proposed building footprint of 293m2.
The site lies within the curtilage of the existing Volvo Dealership at Axis Business Park. The new building will be operated by the applicant in conjunction with the existing Volvo dealership and will share some of the existing facilities such as the workshop and valet building.
The building will be clad in white vertically laid modular metal cladding panels with a low brick base course. The showroom will have aluminium curtain walling display windows facing on to Marjoribanks Road to the south and the customer entrance to the east.

Approving the plans on October 14, the council’s chief planning officer David Givan said: “The proposed design and scale of the building is compatible with the surrounding area, which is characterised by similarly designed buildings operating as motor retail showrooms.
“The proposal is compatible with surrounding uses and is of an acceptable design and scale. There are no material considerations that outweigh this conclusion.”
The new Polestar showroom will be situated on the southern part of the existing Volvo site and will face on to Marjoribanks Road. The existing site entrance from Marjoribanks Road will become the customer entrance for the Polestar showroom.
The building will accommodate a showroom for five display cars, a separate handover bay, consultation rooms, a tea prep and toilet facilities including an accessible toilet. Staff will also have use of canteen and changing facilities within the existing Volvo showroom.
A section of the 2.4m high security fencing to the Marjoribanks Road boundary will be removed and replaced with 600mm high rails to match those to the Volvo dealership frontage.
The applicant now has three years to carry out the works, with a condition added to approval that no development shall take place until full details of the solar PV scheme have been submitted to and approved in writing by the local planning authority.
