Covid: I really hope kids can carry on as normal – Hayley Matthews

As the threat of a second wave of Covid looms, Hayley Matthews hopes children will be able to continue playing with their friends.

I was on BBC Radio 2 with Jeremy Vine earlier in the week discussing the new “rule of six”.

With kids being excluded from the recent restrictions, it really makes it so much easier to still see some family and friends and I’m quite pleased they’re exempted.

Jeremy raised a great point though – if we met with another two couples who had three or more kids each, that’s a lot of kids mixing with surely some a risk.

However, have you seen the playgrounds recently? The schools are back to “almost normal” and kids mucking about in parks again is a lovely sight to see, so surely we can let them all play still?

Especially since they don’t seem to catch Covid as much as adults and seem to get it much less worse.

I’m hoping they’ll be ok to keep playing with pals unless cases really do spike (she says with her hands over her eyes peering out).

As we saw earlier in the week, the introduction of the new rules means things are going backwards slightly, so it’s no surprise that we’re all feeling a bit touchy about a second spike but surely though, it has to be really bad before we stop kids mingling with each other again?

I appreciate that the winter months are coming and I’m sure I’m not the only one still bracing myself for another spike but, with the peace of mind that kids are being encouraged to wash their hands and use antibacterial hand gel up to eight times a day in school, I think we can let them carry on as normal just now because they’ve been through enough.
