Looking back at the news stories of 2023 is a reminder of the many different aspects of city life. Among the events which made the headlines were the problems with luggage piling up at Edinburgh Airport, the vandal attack on a CCTV camera used to enforce restrictions in a low-traffic neighbourhood and the soaring rents faced by students, as well as other stories like the plan for a replica to replace the too-fragile Jawbone Arch at The Meadows and hundreds of Kate Bush fans recreating one of the singer's most iconic moments in Holyrood Park.
25. Petition for ferry to Europe
An online petition calling for a ferry link between Scotland and Europe attracted nearly 12,000 signatures in just over two weeks. Procurement project manager Steven Low, 46, from Juniper Green, claimed the tourism benefit to Scotland from a ferry link to Europe would be worth the investment, bringing jobs to the country, as well as being a greener way of travelling. The closest ferry route to Europe currently available was from Newcastle. Photo: John Devlin
26. Holyrood Park car ban
Historic Environment Scotland, which manages Edinburgh's Holyrood Park, proposed a ban on through traffic in 650-acre park to make it safer for walking and cycling. It argued a car ban would improve people's experience of the park, but others claimed it would mean congestion and increased pollution elsewhere. Photo: Ian Georgeson
