Police report three 'Surron-style' electric motorbikes involved in Edinburgh hit-and-run

Residents and councillors have spoken out about the need for tougher regulation of electric motorcycles and scooters

Edinburgh police have reported that three ‘Surron-style’ electric motorbikes were involved in a hit-and-run incident which left a woman in hospital.

Emergency services were called to St Patrick Square at around 2.20pm on Tuesday following reports of a crash involving a woman and two e-scooters, the riders of which fled the scene before officers arrived.

The road was closed to traffic for over an hour and the woman was taken to the Royal Infirmary for medical checks.

On Wednesday, police said it had been established that three riders, instead of the two initially reported, were involved in the hit-and-run.

All were understood to be driving Surron-style electric motorbikes - a type of e-bike that has become popular among young people.

The incident has sparked outrage among residents and councillors who claim the “reckless” behaviour of such drivers is putting pedestrians in the city at risk.

Marie-Clair Munro, a Scottish Conservative councillor for the Morningside ward, said she had warned Edinburgh Council tougher action was needed to mitigate the dangers of such bikes and was “not surprised” a serious incident had happened.

Ms Murno has been joined by others calling for tougher regulation of e-bikes and e-scooters, including measures to make it easier to identity those breaking the law.

Police said an investigation is underway to trace the individuals involved in Tuesday’s incident.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 2.20pm on Tuesday, 16 June, 2026 police were called to a crash involving a female pedestrian and three electric scooters in St Patrick Square, Edinburgh.

“Emergency services attended and the woman was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh to be checked over.

“Following enquiries, it was established that it was three Surron-style electric motorbikes involved and enquiries are ongoing to trace the riders and establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

“Anyone with information or footage is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident 1650 of Tuesday, 16 June, 2026.”
