Former Hibs ace makes latest transfer move as he ends free agency stint at English Championship club

The former Hibs star counts the likes of Rangers and Hull City, amongst others, on his CV.

A former Hibs and Rangers star has ended his time in free agency by signing with an English Championship side.

Greg Docherty had a successful loan spell at Easter Road during the 2019/20 season. He has also featured for Hamilton Accies, Rangers, Shrewsbury Town, Hull City and Charlton Athletic, but has been without a club since leaving the latter. The midfielder has now been snapped up by Preston North End, who are managed by Graham Alexander, who recently replaced former Hibs boss Paul Heckingbottom after his sacking at Deepdale.

Docherty said: “I feel really proud to have joined this football club. My family and I are absolutely delighted to get this over the line and I can’t wait to get going on the pitch.

Who has Greg Docherty signed for?

“I’ve always loved the idea of playing for Preston North End and I love Deepdale as a stadium too. I found it extremely tough playing here as an opposition player, so I’m glad to be on the other side now.

“I’ve had a really good feeling when speaking to the manager and when I see how passionate he is about turning this situation around, it gives me so much excitement to try and help change it too.”

Alexander said: “We’re really pleased to bring Greg in. He’s been a captain, won promotions and knows the game inside out. Greg’s vocal, fit and motivated, which are all the key things you look for in a professional footballer. He has settled into the group really quickly and has a real willingness to show what he can do.”

What have Preston North End said about Greg Docherty?

A Preston statement adds: “Preston North End are delighted to announce the signing of Greg Docherty on a deal until the end of the 2026/27 season. The 30-year-old arrives at Deepdale with plenty of experience, having made over 400 career appearances for teams such as Rangers, Hull City and Charlton Athletic. Greg will wear the number five shirt for PNE, which was last held by Harrison Armstrong during the 2025/26 campaign.

“Greg’s career began with Hamilton Academical, where he played over 100 times before getting picked up by Scottish giants Rangers. After loan spells away from Ibrox with Shrewsbury Town and Hibernian, the Scotsman was signed permanently by Hull City in 2020. Greg featured almost 150 times in East Yorkshire and lifted the 2020/21 Sky Bet League One title.

“The past two seasons have seen Greg play his football at Charlton Athletic, where he achieved another promotion out of the third tier as The Addicks’ captain in 2025. He has spent the past couple of weeks training with Graham Alexander’s team and recently featured for North End’s U21s side in their 1-0 win over Fleetwood Town in the Premier League Cup.”
