How many pass marks would you hand out at the footballing equivalent of half term, then? There wouldn’t be many in this Hibs squad looking forward to parents’ evening, given their efforts over the opening 15 games of season 2026-27.
For every high, there have been at least two lows. Crashing out of Europe at the final hurdle in truly agonising fashion. Losing the derby – thanks at least in part to a red card from a player who should know better.
Despite guiding Hibs to their first semi-final since 2023, David Gray ultimately paid the price as the Easter Road board removed the manager – who had secured back-to-back European qualification by finishing third and then fifth in his first two seasons as a head coach – last week. Since then, more than one player has spoken about the collective responsibility they’ve felt over the gaffer’s sacking.
So let’s take a look at how they’ve all fared, individually, in a campaign where only one or two have impressed with anything approaching consistency.
This isn’t a rating of their ability as footballers, as such. Or even, when it comes to it, their performances when they’ve been on the field.
Consider it, instead, a numerical mark based on their contribution to the season. It doesn’t make for pretty reading.

5. CM Azeem Abdulai
1/10 A lightning rod for fan discontent over the summer transfer window, the former Scotland Under-21 international - now on senior duty with Sierra Leone - has been restricted to 69 minutes of game time. | SNS Group

6. CM/CAM Callum Wright
5/10 Has scored a couple of big goals, at Ibrox and Dens Park. But what is he? A wide player, an attacking midfielder? Summer signing is taking time to settle - and really struggled on the night that cost Gray his job. | SNS Group

7. CF Nathan Lowe
5/10 He tries. Oh how he tries. And he's got something, right? Not just size. But he set the bar high on goal scoring, admirably - and hasn't backed it up. Yet.

8. CM Jamie McGrath
4/10 Fine - better than fine, actually - when fit. But hasn't contributed enough because of injury, including pulling out in the warm-up ahead of the Aberdeen game. Has started 5 of 15 games this season. | SNS Group
