The 24-year-old Welshman spent the first half of this season on loan at Wigan in England’s League One, but that deal has expired and he has now switched to the Peninsula Stadium for the remainder of the season to join the League Two Ammies promotion push.

Salford, who are owned by Project 92 and can count Gary Neville and Paul Scholes as their directors, moved into pole position to land James after uncertainty behind the scenes with a proposed takeover hampered Wigan’s bid to retain the former Yeovil Town player’s services.

James has played 24 times for the Latics this season. He has a further year on his Hibs contract to run, but is out of the picture with Paul McGinn, club captain David Gray and new signing Chris Cadden ahead of him at right-back.

A Hibs statement read: “We wish Tom all the best for the rest of the campaign.”
