Skim through a list of Hibs’ continental opposition between the 1960s and 1980s and it reads like a who’s who of European football.
Barcelona, Juventus, Porto, Liverpool, Schalke, Feyenoord, and Hajduk Split all visited Easter Road for UEFA Cup, Fairs Cup, Cup Winners’ Cup, or friendly action.
While precious few photos survive of many of these encounters, the Evening News photographers were on hand to capture snapshots of these illustrious jousts with Europe’s elite.
How many of these matches do you remember attending?
1. Barcelona, friendly, 1962
Barcelona returned to Edinburgh for a friendly as an apology for their conduct in the previous season's Fairs Cup competition. Hibs had knocked the Catalans out of the tournament and there was plenty of unsporting behaviour from the Barca players at Easter Road. This time, they won 3-1.
2. Utrecht, Fairs Cup, 1962
Eric Stevenson scores Hibs' second in a 2-1 win against Utrecht in December 1962
3. Valencia, Fairs Cup, 1963
Hibs faced Valencia twice in quick succession in the Fairs Cup in the Sixties. They had already lost 5-0 in Spain in the first leg of the 1962/63 quarter-final, but won the return leg 2-1.
4. Napoli, Fairs Cup, 1967
Trailing 4-1 from the first leg in Italy, Hibs crushed Napoli at Easter Road, beating legendary 'keeper Dino Zoff five times to advance 6-4 on aggregate.
