Rugby: Sonians set for Co-Ops

Watsonians will tonight seek valuable match practice as they attempt to keep in shape for the resumption of the competitive league rugby programme on January 14 when they tackle a Co-Optimists Select side at Myreside (kick-off 7pm).

The Capital outfit, building up to a home meeting with Heriot’s, will face a side containing several former players as well as Barry Stewart, 36, who gained five caps for Scotland between 1996 and 2000.

Prop forward Stewart retired with a neck injury in 2002 while with Edinburgh but was able to successfully resurrect his career at Sale followed by Northampton. Watsonians have still to name a team.
