Livingston Couple Celebrates 60 Years of Marriage

A local love story that began with a whirlwind six-month courtship, an unconventional proposal over a plate of beans, and decades of military service has reached a remarkable milestone. Rosalind and Ronnie Bell, long-time residents of Ladywell and now Craigshill, officially celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, 28th October.

The couple’s journey began in Edinburgh, where Ronnie, then a serving Gordon Highlander, met Rosalind at a local dance hall. Despite spending nearly half of their brief courtship apart due to Ronnie’s active military duties, their connection was instant. Rosalind, who worked as a bookbinder, fondly recalls the courtship and the exact moment Ronnie proposed, not with a grand gesture, but over a simple plate of toast & beans.

Their early married years were a whirlwind of travel defined by military life. Moving where the army required, the family lived across Scotland, Germany, and Singapore, before briefly returning to Edinburgh. In the 1970s, they officially put down roots in Ladywell, Livingston, to raise their three children. Over the last six decades, their family has blossomed into a proud legacy of eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, with another joyfully expected soon.

To mark this rare Diamond Anniversary, the family threw a lively celebration at the couple’s local Masonic Club in Craigshill. The evening was filled with moving toasts, music, a grand buffet, and plenty of laughter. Reflecting on the monumental milestone, their daughter Louise shared a heartfelt and humorous tribute during the speeches:

"60 years. Let’s just pause and think about that for a second. Six decades. That is a diamond-standard achievement by any measure. In fact, Mum, Dad... I think the biggest round of applause tonight should be for the fact that, after 21,900 days under the same roof, you still haven't killed each other!"

The true "icing on the cake" was a stunning custom creation by local hobby baker Lil K’s, featuring a beautifully preserved photograph from their wedding day as the centerpiece.

Following the emotional evening, Ronnie and Rosalind expressed their deep gratitude to their family, friends, and the dedicated club staff who made the celebration unforgettable. Adding to the magic of the milestone, the couple received a very special congratulations card from King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

Sixty years on, the couple credits their enduring marriage to the unwavering strength, devotion, and humour that has carried them from an Edinburgh dance hall all the way to their Diamond Jubilee.
