Both the internet and the arrival of the nearby St James Quarter has led many locals and tourists to shop elsewhere, and the Capital’s most iconic street can often seem quite deserted these days.
But it wasn’t always this way. Have a look through our photo gallery to see a dozen great Princes Street shops of the Nineties and Noughties that are much missed.
9. C&A
Another department store gone. C&A's disappeared in 2001 and later became H&M with the building pictured completely demolished and redeveloped. Photo: BILL HENRY
10. HMV
HMV really was top dog for music back in the day. The Princes Street store was of course Edinburgh's flagship, and was massively extended in 1998 (pictured). Photo: GRAHAM HAMILTON
11. BHS Stores
British Home Stores was a Princes Street staple in the 1990s and 2000s. Now also sadly gone, but the A-listed building is still with us. Photo: Dan Phillips
12. John Menzies
A wonderful store offering everything from stationery and magazines, to computer games and the latest chart hits. There was a debate about the way you pronounced the name: some people called it Menzies, others opted for Menzies. Photo: ALAN LEDGERWOOD
