More security at police event after terror attacks

SECURITY for a public meeting of the Scottish Police Authority has been stepped up in a bid to protect senior officers from terrorist attack.

Members of the public wishing to attend the next meeting of the Scottish Police Authority (SPA) in the Capital will have to notify organisers as part of the safety drive.

Leaders of the policing standards body have tightened security after recent shootings in Europe left three officers dead and many others injured.

They will hold their next official gathering at Edinburgh’s John McIntyre Conference Centre on Tuesday.

Under previous arrangements, anyone could turn up unannounced and watch proceedings. But under new measures, spectators will have to register beforehand.

An SPA spokesman said: “We need to take due cognisance that the threat level for police personnel across the UK was raised during January.

“While we do not discuss the detail of measures we take to run secure public meetings, we have introduced a requirement for advance notification from public attendees at our next board meeting in Edinburgh on February 24.”
