The new line would involve new track from Granton Square to link up with the existing line through the city centre and then more new track down the North Bridge corridor to Cameron Toll and on to the Infirmary and BioQuarter.
The section between Crewe Toll and the city centre could follow one of two routes - one of the key issues in the 12-week consultation now under way.
The tramline could use either the Roseburn Path pedestrian and cycle route, linking up with the existing line before Haymarket; or the alternative option of going via Crewe Road South and Orchard Brae, crossing Dean Bridge and joining the existing line at the west end of Princes Street.
Here is a look at the proposed stops along the way - including both the Roseburn Path and Orchard Brae option. The pictures do not necessarily reflect the precise location proposed for each stop.

17. Mayfield Gardens
There would be another tram stop at Mayfield Gardens, close to the junction with Mentone Gardens. | Google

18. Cameron Toll
Trams would call at Cameron Toll and there has been talk of a boulevard to provide easy access between the tram stop and the shopping centre. A route was previously agreed for trams to run to the south of the Cameron Toll roundabout, but due to the construction of a fast-food outlet the route would now take the trams through the centre of the roundabout and along the edge of the shopping centre. | Google

19. The Inch
The Inch is an example of an established area of the city with low car ownership, where a tram link would provide important connections to the city centre and elsewhere for work, education, health and leisure. | Google

20. Royal Infirmary
A tramline to the Royal Infirmary at Little France was envisaged right from the start of the return of trams to Edinburgh - indeed some believe it should have been the first priority. The proposed North-South line would provide that link not only for patients and visitors, but crucially also for staff. | Google
