Boxing legend Frank Bruno to speak at mental health event in Edinburgh's Muirhouse

The event aims to encourage men to talk openly about their mental wellbeing

Boxing legend Frank Bruno is set to visit Muirhouse for a special event aimed at encouraging men to open up about their mental health.

The former heavyweight world champion will appear at North Edinburgh Arts on Thursday, November 12, for an exclusive “In Conversation With” evening hosted by local community organisation Blast Boxing CIC.

With November marking Men’s Mental Health month, the organisation seeks to encourage more conversation around men’s mental wellbeing following a number of tragic male suicides which have affected communities across North Edinburgh in recent months.

Bruno will speak about his experiences with mental health, as well as his life both inside and outside of the ring.

The evening will be hosted by Blast Boxing CIC founder Kevin Matthews, who will lead a Q&A session exploring Bruno’s rise to sporting fame, the challenges he faced after retiring and his experiences of living with bipolar disorder.

Kevin said: “Frank’s story resonates deeply with the communities we work in.

“His openness about mental health, combined with his incredible boxing legacy, makes this event truly special.

“We’re proud to bring something of this scale to Muirhouse and hope it inspires men across North Edinburgh to talk, connect and seek support when they need it.”

Organisers say the event will provide a space for honesty and connection, with Bruno’s story highlighting that mental health struggles can affect anyone, regardless of their background or achievements.

The evening will begin with a reception at 6pm, before the main Q&A starts at 7pm.

Tickets will cost £45 and include entry to the event as well as a professional photograph with Bruno.

Bruno’s visit forms part of Blast Boxing CIC’s wider work to promote physical activity alongside mental wellbeing in North Edinburgh.

The organisation runs mainly out of West Pilton Neighbourhood Centre and hosts a number of programmes, including Box’n’Blether, Men’s BAWS (Boxing and Wellbeing Session), Women’s Wellbeing & Workout and youth boxing coaching.

They aim to create a safe and supportive space where people can use exercise and conversation to build resilience and tackle the stigma surrounding mental health.

Frank Bruno rose to fame during the 1980s and 90s, becoming one of Britain's best heavyweight boxers.

His career reached its peak when he beat Oliver McCall, and went on to become WBC heavyweight champion.

Since retiring, Bruno has become a big advocate for mental health awareness, speaking publicly about his experiences with bipolar disorder and the difficulties he faces following his sporting career.

Organisers say his appearance in Muirhouse will combine sport, personal storytelling and community spirit, while encouraging men to speak openly about their wellbeing.
