Edinburgh is such a beautiful city but once you get off the beaten track and away from the big tourist attractions, there is a wealth of forgotten buildings that you may not know are there. Some are creepy while others are just fascinating.
Here’s a look at ten of the most interesting ones including an old war bunker which is set to be restored and turned into a museum.
5. Scotland Street Tunnel
The mile-long tunnel that lies deep below the New Town once formed a rail link directly between Waverley Station and Canonmills. It was abandoned in 1868 after 21 years of operation and has been mostly closed off to the public since. It has been a mushroom farm; a place to store motorcars; and even Scotland's biggest air raid shelter. Photo: National World
6. Duddingston and Craigmillar station
Duddingston and Craigmillar station closed in 1962, when passenger rail services were withdrawn from the Edinburgh Suburban line. However, the line itself was retained for rail freight use and the route is still used for freight services. Photo: EEN
7. Shrubhill tram depot
A hulking Victorian structure built in 1898, the depot is an awe-inspiring sight. The crumbling shell has been earmarked for redevelopment as apartments. Photo: EEN
8. East Fortune Hospital, East Lothian
Signs warn of danger on entering the dilapidated, former psychiatric hospital which is located just 25 minutes from Edinburgh. Empty since the 90s, the hospital became a psychiatric facility in the 50s after it used to be a tuberculosis ward. To this day it's still got the furniture and many items left behind since it shut more than 25 years ago. Photo: Lisa Ferguson
