More than 100 pedestrian crossings around Edinburgh have been automated as part of an effort to stop the spread of coronavirus.

Pedestrians will no longer have to press the button to activate the “green man” at 136 crossing points on some of the city’s busiest streets.

Instead, the signal to say it is safe to cross the road will automatically run as part of the usual timed traffic light sequences for cars.

While some of the automated crossings will run 24 hours a day, others will only be automatic from 7am to 9pm each day to minimise noise pollution in residential areas.

Edinburgh Council, who made the changes, hopes that fewer people pressing the same surfaces in busy pedestrian areas will help lower the rate of coronavirus transmission.

Explaining the decision the Council said: “We’ve automated some of the busiest pedestrian crossings around Edinburgh, meaning you don’t have to push the button and help to minimise the spread of germs during the coronavirus outbreak.”

“These changes will run during the day and evening, when it’s most needed by people who are exercising or making essential journeys.

“For most locations, the automatic green man will operate from 7am and stop between 7pm and 11pm, depending on the location, to avoid noise issues overnight.

The 'beeping' alert will still operate so that people with visual disabilities are aware it is safe to cross.

Transport and Environment Convener Lesley Macinnes said: “Our work to help protect people’s safety while out and about takes into account various pinch points and barriers to physical distancing.

“By automating more than 100 pedestrian crossings across the city we’re minimising the need for people to gather or touch buttons, stopping the spread of germs.”
