Edinburgh’s courts dished out sentences last month for crimes including domestic abuse, possessing child sex abuse images, and one man was sent to jail for murdering his wife.
A firefighter escaped a driving ban and instead was handed penalty points and a fine after he drove his car through a give way junction and crashed into a truck carrying more than 250,000 eggs while travelling home from a family holiday, leaving his wife and two family members with serious injuries.
And, a disabled man who smashed a laptop over the head of his terrified partner during a shocking campaign of domestic abuse escaped a jail sentence. Ross Queripel, 27, was instead placed on a two-year supervision order and will have stay within his home between 7pm and 7am for the next four months as part of a restriction of liberty order.

Edinburgh carer Kevin Kenny, 46, was found to have downloaded more than 20,000 pictures of male and female children being sexually abused by adults when police raided his Edinburgh home last year. Kenny pleaded guilty to the offence when he appeared at the Capital’s sheriff court and was placed on the Sex Offenders Register and ordered to carry out unpaid work earlier this year. Kenny was banned from working as a carer after the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) struck him from its register following a decision on November 22. The SSSC found it proved Kenny had been convicted of possessing indecent images of children while employed as a senior care assistant with Renaissance Care (Scotland) Limited between February 2016 and August 2017. An East Lothian firefighter crashed into a truck carrying more than 250,000 eggs while travelling home from a family holiday. Ross Queen drove his car through a give way junction and collided with the large HGV, leaving his wife and two family members with serious injuries. Queen, 35, was heading home from a trip to Alton Towers when he failed to notice the “notorious” junction on the outskirts of Penicuik in Midlothian in October last year. Edinburgh Sheriff Court was told the firefighter’s wife Nicola suffered a broken hip while her sister was left with a fractured wrist and her husband with a broken rib. Queen admitted an amended charge of careless driving during a court hearing on November 24 but escaped a driving ban and instead was handed penalty points and a fine. Photo: Alexander Lawrie
Sandeep Sandhu, 35, was sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh on Monday after he was found guilty of five offences, including two counts of rape, at an earlier trial in October. The offences happened between December 2018 and July 2021. Sandu was arrested and charged in January 2022 after one woman came forward to police to report his offences. A subsequent second victim was then identified and traced. Photo: National World
