Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh is set to play a surprise DJ set in Edinburgh tonight (Friday, September 13).

The Muirhouse-raised writer will hit the decks at the latest instalment of The Get Down, the hugely-popular cross-generational club nights held in Leith Arches.

As reported in the Evening News last week, Irvine has become a regular fixture at the events – and he even invited co-founders Ricardo and Subbo to DJ to his wedding.

“Leith has always had a strong sense of community,” said Irvine. “People come together to make their own fun, whatever is happening in the world. It’s no surprise to me that The Get Down is such a huge success.

“Clubs are spaces where people feel free to be themselves. I just see happy people, getting down, and getting through life.”

Since launching a year ago, The Get Down has attracted a number of big-name DJs. August saw legendary New York Producer and DJ Victor Simonell on the decks. Simonelli can count David Bowie, Michael Jackson, and Debbie Harry among his producing credits.

Tonight, is the final time the venue can be used for licensed events – but to soften the blow somewhat, it's going to be a biggie with the special guest appearance of one of Leith's favourite sons.

Sharing the news, Ricardo said: “When Irvine was informed it's unfortunately the last time that the cafe can be used for licensed events, he got in touch with The Get Down and said he would love to have a spin to show his support."

Irvine is no stranger to DJing. He’s played events all over the world, and in May this year, he delighted partygoers in Edinburgh with a surprise slot at Day Fever, the daytime disco brought to the city by Line of Duty star Vicky McClure.

You can catch Irvine behind the decks at The Cafe Leith Arches tonight from 6.30pm.
