It is rare that the opportunity to design a building is the prize for entering a competition, but in 1895 W. Hamilton Beattie and A.R. Scott won the opportunity to design what was then known as The North British Station Hotel (The N.B.) - owned by the North British Railway Company. Today the building is better known as The Balmoral.

The Waldorf Astoria - The Caledonian Hotel on Princes Street has been a landmark in the Capital since 1903. Known as 'the Caley' the building takes its name from the Caledonian Railway Company, who used to own the hotel for many years. It was relaunched after Hilton took over in 2000. It has been named in the top 25 historic hotels worldwide and attracted many celebrities over the years, including Gene Kelly and Judy Garland.
