Lothians cyclist Evan Oliphant produced a solid performance at the Beaumont Trophy in Northumberland. but there was no repeat of his previous podium finishes.
Now riding for Wheelbase Altura, Oliphant featured in a high-quality field of 158 starters for the 117-mile event contested in hot conditions and at a fast pace over a tough route.
He missed the key break of the day in which 15 riders went clear and built a lead of around six minutes. Eventually the group dwindled to two and ultimately that duo – Pete Williams (OnePro Cycling) and James Gullen (JLT Condor) – took the leading two spots.
In their wake, Williams’team-mate Tom Stewart grabbed third spot, seven seconds adrift and Oliphant crossed the line as part of the main bunch.
